Ryan Giles is desperate to get back playing “with a smile on my face” after signing up to Hull City’s promotion charge. The attacking left-back made his Tigers debut in Saturday’s hard-earned win over Millwall.
His maiden City outing came just days after joining the club on loan from Luton Town for the remainder of the season, with the option to make it permanent in the summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £4m. The Tigers beat off strong competition from other Championship clubs to land the 24-year-old.
Giles said he learned of City’s interest in his services a “couple of weeks” before the window closed. “Things happen in transfer windows; they are up and down all the time,” he told Hull Live.
“Luckily, I was able to get it done before the deadline, which I was really happy about. I know from a club perspective that if they could have got me in earlier they would have probably preferred to but I am here now.
“We came to a collective decision, not just me, but the (Luton) manager Rob Edwards, Gary Sweet the CEO there, that we felt it was right for me to go out and get some games and enjoy football.”
Giles starred on loan at Middlesbrough last term. He played an instrumental role in their run to the play-off semi-final, chipping in with 11 Championship assists for the Teessiders. His impressive form earned him a permanent move to Kenilworth Road.
But Luton opted to let Giles go on a temporary basis, with the defender having struggled to nail down a regular starting berth since his big-money switch. “I want to play football and play with a smile on my face,” said Giles, who is expected to be involved against Swansea City this weekend. “I know a career goes by the click of your fingers. Before you know, I will be finished.
