Newcastle United summer target Dominic Calvert-Lewin could be set for a cut-price January transfer move after reports suggesting new contract talks had stalled.
The Magpies made an enquiry about the Everton striker in June, but decided not to follow up their interest after hearing the Toffees £37m asking price. However, the 27-year-old could be available on a free next summer with his contract on Merseyside set to expire.
Reports this week from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claim that talks with Calvert-Lewin and Everton are yet to progress, with discussions planned for later in the year. There is no indication at this stage that talks have broken down, however.
Newcastle will be among a number of clubs monitoring the situation closely, with Eddie Howe said to be an admirer of the striker. United currently only have Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson and William Osula as striking options, with Wilson yet to feature this season due to an ongoing back problem.
It’s the latest in a long line of unfortunate injury lay-offs for the former England striker, with the 32-year-old only making six appearances in 2024 to date. Howe confirmed last week that he is unlikely to feature until after the October international break, while Osula was only given his United debut in the latter stages of the defeat to Fulham on Saturday.
Whether United target a striker in January remains to be seen, with much of the summer spent in talks with Crystal Palace over defender Marc Guehi. The right-hand side of the forward line has also been an area for improvement, with some suggesting a new defensive midfielder is required.
