Fabrizio Romano has provided a major update regarding the contractual situation of Tottenham defender Cristian Romero amid links to Real Madrid.

Tottenham Hotspur fans have reason to feel anxious as speculation swirls around defender Cristian Romero and his potential transfer to Real Madrid.

Over the years, Spurs have faced challenges in keeping their star players, with notable departures like Harry Kane, Luka Modric, and Gareth Bale lured away by some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Now, Romero has become the latest player linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, but it seems any transfer would not come cheap.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano took to social media platform X to provide clarity regarding Romero’s contract situation amid the ongoing speculation.

He dismissed reports from Argentina suggesting that the central defender has a €65 million release clause, stating:

“There’s NO €65m release clause in Cuti Romero’s contract at Spurs despite reports from Argentina.”

Romano also emphasised that Tottenham regarded Romero as “untouchable” last summer, despite interest from top clubs.

With growing interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid, Tottenham is reportedly eager to tie Romero down to a new deal. The 26-year-old defender spoke earlier this season about his future with the club, insisting he is focused on winning a trophy with Spurs and is not distracted by transfer rumours.

Despite his commitment to Tottenham, Romero’s performances have been inconsistent at the start of the current Premier League campaign.

He has been involved in several costly mistakes, particularly in matches against Leicester City and Brighton, where his errors contributed to the team’s struggles.
