Offensive Coordinator Changes
In October 2024, head coach Brent Venables dismissed co-offensive coordinator and primary play-caller Seth Littrell following a series of underwhelming offensive performances. Littrell, a former Sooner and head coach at North Texas, had been with the program since the previous season.
Joe Jon Finley, previously co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, was promoted to primary play-caller. Finley, an Oklahoma alumnus with coaching experience at Missouri, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss, assumed these responsibilities for the first time in his career.
Additionally, offensive analyst Kevin Johns was elevated to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Johns brought over a decade of experience as an offensive coordinator, most recently at Duke, where he developed quarterback Riley Leonard.
Defensive Staff Adjustments
The defensive coaching staff also saw changes with the departure of co-defensive coordinator Zac Alley, who accepted the position of assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at West Virginia University in December 2024.
Recruiting Violations and Suspensions
In August 2024, running backs coach DeMarco Murray was suspended for one game due to recruiting violations involving impermissible contacts with prospects. The university self-reported the violations and implemented corrective measures, including probation and recruiting restrictions.
Potential for Future Changes
As of January 2025, there have been no official announcements regarding additional coaching changes. However, the dynamic nature of college football coaching staffs means that further adjustments are always possible, especially as the Sooners strive to enhance their performance in the competitive SEC landscape.
