Scotland’s UEFA Women’s Nations League campaign set to begin in Sunderland.
The Scotland Women’s National Team embark on their UEFA Women’s Nations League campaign against FIFA World Cup runners-up England at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland tonight. Pedro Martinez Losa’s side go into the game on a six-game unbeaten run with impressive recent wins over Finland, Northern Ireland and Australia.
The last time the two sides met resulted in a narrow defeat for Scotland in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Lionesses go into the first fixture of the inaugural competition with only two defeats in their previous 39 matches.
Scotland will take to the field tonight wearing our 150th Anniversary shirt, having worn the heritage-inspired shirt previously against Costa Rica at Hampden park.
A brand-new competition, the UEFA Women’s Nations League presents a new challenge to national teams throughout Europe. Watch below, as Amy Canavan explains how the competition works, and what it could mean for our future EURO 2025 qualification hopes.
Erin Cuthbert is missing from the squad due to injury. Captain Rachel Corsie returns, along with Christy Grimshaw and Claire Emslie. Everyone selected for the squad is fit and available.
Pre-match thoughts
Midfielder, Caroline Weir: “This is where we want to be. We know it’s going to be tough, but this is where we can learn, improve and challenge ourselves.
“I really believe we’ve made progress over the last six months, but this is where it shows and these are the kind of games we need to be playing in.
“We have a lot of respect for what England have done in the last 12 months, but I think they know they’re in for a tough test – we’re on a good run ourselves. We think it’s a great time to play them.
”
Winger, Lisa Evans: “It is a dream start against England at the Stadium of Light, and these are the teams you want to be playing against.
“We are just focused on ourselves. You can say what you want about England, they are one of the best teams in the world.
“They have shown that with the World Cup they had and were unfortunate not to win it in the end, on the back of their Euro success as well.
“They are at the top of their game right now and it will be a massive test for us, but one we are looking forward to.”
