After Leicester City’s outstanding start to 2023/24, Club Historian John Hutchinson has discovered some further noteworthy numbers from the Club’s past.

In August, Enzo Maresca’s Foxes were unstoppable, winning all four of their Sky Bet Championship games.

That league feat had never been accomplished by a Leicester team before, earning the Italian the Manager of the Month honor, which was announced on Friday.

For the first time in their 139-year history, City was able to open a new season with six straight victories when combined with the two Carabao Cup triumphs over Burton Albion and Tranmere Rovers.

Leicester had won their opening three games on three separate occasions prior to this season. These all come from the previous Second Division.

The first time it occurred was in 1899–1900, when Leicester Fosse, as the Club was then known, defeated Woolwich Arsenal 2-0 on the club’s opening day at Plumstead’s Manor Ground.

Following that, they defeated Barnsley at home 1-0 and repeated the feat against Burton Swifts. Under Manager George Johnson, the Club’s longest-serving manager, they finished the season in fifth place.

Seven years later, Leicester traveled to Burslem Port Vale to open the Second Division, winning 2-1. The following match was against Grimsby Town at Filbert Street, and a 2-0 victory made it two wins in a row to open the 1906–07 campaign.

When Leicester lost against Burnley at home by the same score, they were denied promotion to the top division and finished third in the standings.

Following the First World War, Leicester City had an incredible league season debut in 1922–1923. Following a thrilling 5-4 victory over Stockport County, Rotherham was defeated 3-0 at Filbert Street.

They triumphed 2-0 the following time they played Stockport, this time at home, and finished the season in third place. Two years later, the Club will be promoted to the First Division as champions under Manager Peter Hodge.
