Ben Godfrey could remain at Goodison Park this month amid links with a transfer move away from Everton, especially after Sean Dyche commended his professionalism.
The outcasted defender has most recently been linked with a move to Sheffield United, as per talkSPORT, who are worried about Napoli’s interest in their very own Anel Ahmedhodzic.
But Dyche’s most recent comments could be seen as a sign that Godfrey will keep his spot at Goodison Park, rather than be allowed to move away, despite only having one Premier League start to his name this season.
Asked about the possibility of the 26-year-old’s departure on Thursday (25 January), he said: “No (news on a move). Ben is going along very well.
“His attitude is outstanding and he’s well thought of in the group. He hasn’t had much game time and is frustrated with that obviously. Frustrated not to play. But he’s pushing himself and the group and is a fantastic professional.”
As expected, Dyche relayed a classy answer to the rumours of Godfrey’s departure, choosing to focus on his professionalism rather than fuel the exit links.
And although Godfrey has barely been called upon this campaign, there is no doubt that he is capable of doing so. He proved this during a 2-0 victory over Burnley, replacing Jarrad Branthwaite who had been suspended.
However, the centre-back has failed to build upon that performance, not playing a single minute since. Dyche clearly prefers the defensive partnership of Branthwaite and James Tarkowski, with Michael Keane the usual replacement.
Though Godfrey has fallen down the pecking order, he may be given the opportunity to fight for a spot in the starting XI in the second half of the season, especially if you read between the lines of Dyche’s comments.
