After announcing the signing of 15 non-drafted free agents from the Dominican Republic two weeks ago, the Mariners released their second set of signings during the international signing period. The 15 players in this signing group hail from Latin America countries other than the Dominican Republic.
“During these last few days, we have been able to add diverse talent from many different countries around Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean,” Mariners director of international scouting Frankie Thon Jr. said. “There’s intriguing pitching talent in this group, who have a chance to hit the ground running during their first year of pro ball at the DSL level.”
Highlighting the group is Gabriel Guanchez, a slugging 16-year-old catcher out of Venezuela. He was rated as the No. 83 prospect in the signing class by Baseball America and possesses an above-average throwing arm.
“Guanchez is someone we are really excited about bringing into the organization,” Thon said. “He brings a blend of size, defensive tools, and natural hitting ability that is impressive for any catching prospect at that.
Thon’s scouting report: Aray, 16, is a 5-foot-10, right-handed pitcher with a well-rounded, four-pitch mix. He possesses good fastball life, and above-average control for his age.
