Coventry City boss Mark Robins is furious with one Sheffield Wednesday player after last night’s FA Cup clash at the CBS Arena.
Sheffield Wednesday headed down to Coventry to face the Sky Blues last night, in what was the third meeting between the two teams in the last five fixtures.
And once again it was Coventry City who came out on top.
The Owls lost last night’s FA Cup fourth round replay 4-1, with Bailey Cadamarteri the man on the scoresheet for Sheffield Wednesday.
But the Sky Blues scored three goals in a rampant second half to book themselves a fifth round clash vs Maidstone United at the end of the month, whereas Sheffield Wednesday can now focus on their great escape in the Championship.
Mark Robins fumes at Di’Shon Bernard after ‘naughty incident’
Coventry boss Robins expressed his anger at Sheffield Wednesday defender Di’Shon Bernard after the game.
Bernard appeared to leave a shoulder in the face of Jamie Allen who was forced off, with Coventry later confirming that Allen had to be taken to hospital and was diagnosed with a fractured cheekbone.
As quoted by The Star, Robins said:
“The chance to progress in this tie against these was very sweet. The only sour note was Di’Shon Bernard putting his shoulder in Jamie Allen’s face and fracturing his cheekbone. That’s not ideal and I really would like them (the FA) to have a look at that because it was unsavoury to say the least. It’s a depressed fracture. I’m hoping he won’t have to have surgery but he may do.
“I’ve been in to see the referee and they need to have a look. It was naughty, they were leaving things on us a little bit, a bit too much, but the referee didn’t see it. He said he felt it was innocuous at the time. But it’s deliberate, a bit unsavoury to say the least. It’s not about the time out, it’s about his well-being. I’m hoping he’s OK because he was dazed and you can see the fracture has left a real depression in his cheek. It’s a bad one.”
Losing Bernard would be a huge blow for Sheffield Wednesday
Bernard was perhaps lucky to get away with only a warning following last night’s incident, and it wouldn’t be too surprising if the FA do take a look after Bernard showed a little release of anger on the night.
And if worst comes to worst and Bernard is dealt a ban, it would be a huge blow for Danny Rohl who already has a mountain to climb in this second half of the season.
His side are now winless in six in all competitions and currently sit in 23rd place of the Championship table, with eight points the gap between them and Huddersfield Town in 21st.
But with QPR having bolstered well last month and Town set to bring in a new manager, it seems like Sheffield Wednesday now have to go on a prolonged winning run, or at least an unbeaten run, to stand a chance of closing the gap.
And if they have to do so without key defender Bernard then it’ll be even more difficult.
Up next is a crucial home game vs Birmingham City on Friday night.
