Everton could be set to lose £7million if they were to sell sought-after defender Jarrad Branthwaite, according to Sunday Mirror.
The newspaper reported [11 February, page 68] that Carlisle United insisted on including a sell-on clause when the Toffees signed Branthwaite in January 2020, with it believed a 10 per cent deal was agreed.
It is understood that Everton will demand £70million for their star defender, with Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid all interested in the 21-year-old. If they manage to sell him for that price, £7million of it will go to Carlisle.
Everton to be haunted by Jarrad Branthwaite clause
Considering Branthwaite’s pedigree in the Premier League, it comes as no surprise to see so many European giants interested in the young centre-back. He is one of the most promising defenders in the league, let alone at the club.
Since returning from his season-long loan at PSV Eindhoven last campaign, the defender has become an unstoppable force under Sean Dyche, teaming up with James Tarkowski at the back.
Starting 21 of Everton’s 24 league matches so far, Branthwaite has shoved Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey down the pecking order at Goodison Park, and deservedly so.
However, with Everton’s current financial situation, earning a 10-point deduction due to a Profit and Sustainability breach, the Toffees need every penny they can accumulate from any potential transfers in the summer.
Although losing £7million to Carlisle does not seem a massive loss in the grand scheme of things, any money lost will be seen as a huge deal at Goodison Park.
