Aston Villa are unlikely to bring in Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries as he isn’t the type of player Unai Emery would sign, according to Dan Bardell.
It comes after FC Inter News reported on its website on 8 February that Villa have decided to “test the water” over the Dutch international after making contact with his agent over a summer move to Villa Park.
It added that the Serie A giants have been sorting out contracts with some of their players, but no agreement has been reached with the 27-year-old right-back despite his deal expiring in 2025.
Bardell believes the Villans will sign a new right-back to compete with Matty Cash at some point, but he cast doubts over whether Dumfries could be that player.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “Right-back is probably the only position under Emery where Villa haven’t brought anyone in yet other than the youngster they signed from Red Star Belgrade in January.
“Dumfries is a player who’s been linked with Villa before. I don’t know how much would be in that. It doesn’t strike me as an Emery-type signing, I might be wrong with that.
“I don’t watch a lot of Italian football, but he’s one of those players every time the World Cup and European Championships are on, you notice him for Holland because he’s very good going forward.
“I think Emery seems to favour the left-back as the one that goes forward and he would rather have a more defensive player as a right-back, which has shown with Konsa.
“At some point, Villa will buy another right-back, but I don’t think it will be to replace Matty Cash, I think it will be to compete with him. But on Dumfries, I’m not sure about that one.”
Aston Villa likely to sign new right-back
As Bardell has pointed out, Villa are likely to sign a new right-back as it’s an area where the club have been identifying targets over the past few months.
