Done deal: Leeds United beat off ‘strong competition’ from across Europe to secure £17 million signing, with promotion hopes becoming a reality….

The Whites brought in nine new players after losing several either on loan or permanently following relegation and arguably only Djed Spence can go down as a failure due to the early termination of his deal.

Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon and Glen Kamara look like the pick of the bunch so far, though Ilia Gruev has also come to the fore recently. Joel Piroe and Sam Byram have played their parts, too.

But there is perhaps one player who stands above the rest from that list and it is Ampadu, who is preparing for his first reunion with former club Chelsea tomorrow after leaving for £7 million in the summer.

Ahead of his return to Stamford Bridge, journalist Nizaar Kinsella – who broke the story of his move to Elland Road in the first place – has now reported Leeds beat off ‘great competition’ from across Europe for the 23-year-old.

Leeds saw off stiff competition for Ampadu

Ampadu was the first signing of the 49ers era and to prise him to the Championship amid competition from top European clubs was clearly a signal of intent from the owners.

Kinsella also tweeted that he was ‘reliably informed’ Ampadu has been ‘outstanding’ for Leeds and that is certainly the case, having played all but one minute of every league match this season.

In the absence of Pascal Struijk, and with Liam Cooper on the bench, Ampadu has been given the armband in recent weeks, a responsibility he has thrived upon.

Ampadu had played the first 26 matches of the campaign in central midfield but since covering for the injured Struijk at the back, his performance levels haven’t dropped.
