Despite his brief period at the helm at St Andrew’s following an underwhelming spell with DC United in the USA’s Major League Soccer, the 38-year-old hopes he can still work his way back up in his managerial career to be considered for the top jobs at his other former clubs and become a potential future successor for Sean Dyche. Rooney told Match of the Day: “Managing Manchester United or Everton is the aim, these big jobs are where you want to get to.

“But it’s a process. I have got to go through the steps and get myself back on track.
