While it appears that the Texas Rangers aren’t the favorites to land Jordan Montgomery in free agency, the reigning World Series champions aren’t dead just yet. The Rangers, according to USA Today baseball insider Bob Nightengale, are still in a mix if ownership has a change a change of heart. From USA Today: MLB team executives widely believe that two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell will ultimately sign with the Los Angeles Angels or possibly the San Francisco Giants, while Texas Rangers’ postseason hero Jordan Montgomery will wind up with the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox have kept in constant contact with Montgomery while the Rangers are keeping tabs if owner Ray Davis suddenly changes his mind. The Rangers’ position is financial, even though the club should see a revenue bump at the box office coming off the franchise’s first title. Also, the loss of broadcast revenue isn’t as severe as expected despite the bankruptcy proceedings of Bally Sports parent company Diamond Sports Group. Broadcast rights beyond 2024 are unclear. Texas could sure use Montgomery in the rotation, especially as the club awaits the returns of Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle later this summer. The current rotation is headlined by Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, Andrew Heaney and Dane Dunning.
Montgomery would give Texas another reliable frontline starter alongside Eovaldi as the club navigates the first few months of the season. Another possible suitors mentioned in the Montgomery sweepstakes have been the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs and American League West rival Los Angeles Angels.
