Dan Plumley has shared that automatic promotion to the Premier League would instantly earn Leeds United £120million this season.
With the promotion so tight, there is the possibility that the Whites could drop into the play-offs as they sit one point ahead of Ipswich with nine games to go.
The football finance expert dispelled the myth that you can earn so much more from winning the Championship play-offs, with around £3.5million added to that huge windfall mentioned already if you go all the way.
“There is but it is not as much as you would think as an add-on,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.
“The £120million minimum figure linked to promotion, you get whichever way you get there as that is the TV broadcasting money and obviously if you stay in the league that then doubles and that’s where the big windfall is.
“In terms of extra revenue generated from going up in the play-offs, it’s quite minimal in comparison, you’ve got one extra home match, Leeds averaged around £1million-per-match in the Premier League so it will be a little bit less but let’s say £1million for the home match, you have a little bit to come from the away match but that’s going to be at a fairly low level and then you have the TV money.
“Working on estimates, we think it is around £100,000 for a home fixture, and £10,000 for an away fixture, then you’ve got the final at Wembley, so there is maybe another £1.5-2million from ticket sales and the TV fee, as well.
“Let’s say, and I’m being conservative, £3.5million from those additional games which is a decent amount of money, but of course, the jeopardy in the play-offs is you don’t go up so on a risk and reward basis, I’m sure most of the clubs would rather be out of the way with automatic promotion.”
Leeds United are going to the Premier League
Daniel Farke’s men are the team to beat right now, as they remain unbeaten in 2024 in the Championship with just one draw so far.
The German is not getting carried away though, and will be looking at finishing top of the pile as Leicester continue to stutter along.
Forget the play-offs, that small sum is not worth the pressure it comes with.
