Birmingham City v Middlesbrough - Sky Bet ChampionshipLeeds United currently have a number of players out on loan across various leagues in Europe.

The Whites are set to face a busy summer of negotiating player exits with many of them having already been deemed surplus to requirements at the club.

Those from last season’s first team at Leeds are unlikely to be offered a route back at Elland Road, while several of the youngsters who were also sent out on loan don’t feel particularly close to making it at the club.

One player who falls under that category is Sam Greenwood, who is now coming towards the end of a season-long-loan spell at Middlesbrough.Birmingham City v Middlesbrough - Sky Bet Championship

Boro actually have an option-to-buy in the deal for Greenwood but his recent lack of involvement under Michael Carrick makes it feel like a permanent move is becoming more and more unlikely.

Greenwood has work to do for permanent Boro move

Greenwood has been named on the bench in five of Boro’s last six matches after a really poor run of form between January and February.

Boro have really managed to turn their form around in the last few weeks, winning four of the six Greenwood has been omitted for. One of their two defeats came in a match Greenwood started.

The 22-year-old had made a really good start at Boro with five goals before the turn of the New Year, but he has not scored since, despite starting some matches up front, where he was so good for Leeds’ U21s.Birmingham City v Middlesbrough - Sky Bet Championship

Boro’s option-to-buy for Greenwood stands at around £1.5 million and while that might not sound much, from an established Championship club with no parachute payments’ perspective, it is.

Boro’s Head of Football Kieran Scott also admitted back in November that promotion for Leeds would also make the deal considerably more difficult. The Whites are sat in second, with a very realistic chance of that happening.Birmingham City v Middlesbrough - Sky Bet Championship

With that in mind, Leeds may have to look elsewhere again if they want to shift Greenwood off the books permanently.
