Leeds United manager Daniel FarkeLeeds United attacker Willy Gnonto was involved in a “brilliant” real-time judgement from the linesman versus Sheffield Wednesday.

That is according to former Premier League referee Chris Foy, with Gnonto having scored the second goal of the game as the Whites won 2-0.

Fellow forward Patrick Bamford was also on target in the Championship clash at Hillsborough on Friday (8 March).

“When the speed of play is as fast as it is here, it is imperative that the assistant referee’s positioning and awareness are of the highest order,” Foy said, as per Sky Sports (12 March).

“The real-time judgement to ‘keep the flag down’ here is a brilliant one, as Leeds’ No 29 latches onto a through ball, and runs through on goal to score.

“In real-time it looked like a really tight decision and the speed of the attack makes it a difficult one for the assistant to get spot on, but he did just that, recognising that Sheffield Wednesday No 5 is playing Leeds No 29 onside.”

Leeds United produce professional display v Sheffield WednesdayLeeds United manager Daniel Farke

It threatened to be a difficult evening on the road for Daniel Farke’s men, but they produced a professional display in this Yorkshire derby.

Sheffield Wednesday had been on a superb run of form going into the game, but remain in deep trouble towards the bottom end of the table after the home defeat.

Farke will be delighted that his attackers were in form in the final third, while his defenders remained switched on to clinch another important clean sheet.

The massive three points means the Elland Road club now sit second in the Championship table, one point ahead of Ipswich Town in third and just three points behind league leaders Leicester City.

The fixtures continue to come thick and fast, with Farke’s men set to take on both Millwall and Watford before March comes to an end, with a rapid promotion back to the Premier League very much on the cards.
