Once again, it’s shaping up to be a massive summer for Sunderland, as they prepare for another season in the Championship.
Sunderland’s summer transfer plans
Of course, the major priority for the Black Cats’ hierarchy is bringing in a new boss, and it will be interesting to see who they line up.
But, despite the chaotic past 12 months at the Stadium of Light, the Sunderland job will be an attractive one, and there are sure to be plenty of high-profile candidates in the running.
Whilst the focus will be on the next boss, the summer is also going to be huge when it comes to recruitment.
There is a general acceptance that Jack Clarke is going to be on the move, with the winger having enjoyed another outstanding individual campaign, which is certain to prompt bids from Premier League clubs.
Ronnie Edwards should be a Sunderland transfer target
Yet, it’s not just Clarke that could depart, as it’s been claimed that Everton are tracking influential centre-back Dan Ballard.
The Northern Irish international has been superb this season, and at 24, he is only getting better, so it would be no surprise if the Toffees put down a big bid for Ballard if Jarrad Branthwaite is sold.
Obviously, Sunderland would want to keep Ballard, but you have to be realistic, and part of the strategy of the Wearside club is not standing in the way if suitable offers arrive.
Therefore, the Black Cats need to be considering replacements for Ballard, and Peterborough’s Ronnie Edwards is someone who ticks all the boxes.
At 20, the centre-back has already racked up over 100 appearances in the Football League, which includes a campaign in the Championship, so he is someone who wouldn’t need time to adapt.
Given his age, he also fits the profile Sunderland want, as they have generally targeted players who they can develop and potentially sell-on – such as Ballard.
