Everton fans hold up Premier League protest cards during the game against Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park on February 3, 2024Everton Football Club have announced that they will be appealing against their second points deduction in a Premier League Profit and Sustainability case this season – but fans in our comments section aren’t convinced that it should be a priority, with the club two points above the relegation zone. Two further points have been docked, making it a total of eight so far.

In a statement, the club said that they were “extremely concerned by the inconsistency of the different commissions in respect of points deductions applied”, referring to the three panels that have overseen their two PSR cases.Everton fans hold up Premier League protest cards during the game against Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park on February 3, 2024

However, they said they were “pleased” at the latest panel’s acceptance of factors that lead to a two-point deduction, including “the concept of double punishment, the significant mitigating circumstances facing the club due to the war in Ukraine, and the high level of co-operation and early admission of the club’s breach.”

Commenter Mickstupp reckons it’s not in the club’s short-term interest to dive into another battle with PSR so soon: “The danger is psychologically that we expect more points back on appeal. That lessens the fight in the players. For me, the club shouldn’t appeal.”

“Take it, the madness of it all can’t be hidden now, it’s out there for everyone to see. It’s not just a case of Evertonians shouting about the inconsistent treatment and the enormous mess the EPL has created for itself, we have a chance now of fighting this out again, getting safe in the knowledge that the EPL tried and failed to put us down.”Everton fans hold up Premier League protest cards during the game against Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park on February 3, 2024

User Stochastic*21 thinks they should make their feelings known in the loudest way possible, however: “A different bunch of IC lawyers but yet again making it all up on the hoof in the PL Sanctions Scratchcard lottery. The club should sue the Premier League if the appeal fails and/or take them to CAS.”
