Enzo Maresca has hit out at Championship organisers over Leicester City’s fixture schedule and what he deems to be a lack of care for players’ health.
Maresca is frustrated that City are making their longest trip of the season to Plymouth on a Friday night, with kick-off at Home Park just 72 hours after another away day at Millwall. The fixture has been brought forward by Sky Sports from Saturday afternoon in order to be broadcast live.
City didn’t arrive back from their midweek trip to London until 3am on Wednesday and the need for recovery means the players will not do much training before taking on the Pilgrims. The focus of Wednesday and Thursday’s sessions is recovery, with City to do their tactical planning on the day of the game on Friday. The squad are set to fly down on Thursday, but will get a coach back after the match.
Heading into the weekend above Ipswich on goal difference and with a one-point lead over Leeds in third, Maresca was irritated that it was only his team of the promotion contenders that were being forced to deal with such a turnaround. Ipswich, having played on Wednesday night, have a shorter period between matches, but both of their games are at home.
