Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has warned Leeds United after Sheffield United were hit with a points deduction for unpaid transfer fees.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Whites could cause a “huge problem” for clubs if they default on their outstanding payment

The EFL announced on 11 April that Sheffield United will get a two-point deduction next season if they are relegated from the Premier League – with a further two points suspended until the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

It has emerged that the Blades defaulted on around £9million of transfer fees, which prompted the punishment.

Meanwhile, Championship promotion chasers Leeds United have revealed that they owe around £190million in unpaid fees to other clubs in their recent 2022-23 accounts.

The Whites also recorded revenue of £189million and an overall loss of £33million.

Leeds face ‘very serious issue’ after Sheffield United points deduction confirmed

Wyness claimed the “danger is very big” if Leeds follow in the footsteps of Sheffield United.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It seems that the Sheffield United owner is solely to blame for this punishment.

“It must be cash flow issues, and that does happen in business.

“The danger is very big, however, if clubs stop paying each other,

“I had a similar issue with Italian clubs during my time with Everton, we had to go to Fifa tribunals.

“It becomes a real issue because you forecast for those payments – and all of a sudden your budget is out of whack.

“So it’s a very serious issue, don’t let the scale of it fool you. Sheffield United was £8million this time, which won’t break the bank.

“But if a bigger club, like Leeds – who owe £190million, don’t pay up, it could be a huge problem for clubs.”
