Milwaukee Brewers, Brewers News, Wade MileyMilwaukee Brewers veteran starting pitcher Wade Miley underwent surgery on Tuesday, May 7 to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow.  At 37 years old he understands that there is a real possibility that following this procedure he may never return to the big leagues.  He is determined to not let that happen to him and following the operation his surgeon relayed optimism that he has a few more years left in him.

Per MLB.com reporter Adam McCalvy the surgical procedure that Wade Miley underwent was the hybrid procedure.  This technique, in addition to repairing the damaged ligament, includes a brace to help provide additional stability to the elbow.  One major advantage to this approach is that the brace takes some of the stress during rehab and throwing and provides additional protection to the repaired ligament.

When will Wade Miley return to the Milwaukee Brewers?

Wade Miley will of course not pitch the remainder of the 2024 season, but hopes are high for early next season.  Dr. Kremcheck, the surgeon who performed Wade Miley’s procedure, is hopeful that he will be facing hitters in Spring Training 2025 and could be in the big leagues by late April or early May.  That timeline has him potentially pitching meaningful innings next year prior to his one year post surgical date.

Dr. Kremcheck is very optimistic that Wade Miley has a few more years left in him.

Cincinnati surgeon Dr. Kremcheck is well known around the baseball community for he has performed a bunch of elbow surgeries on professional pitchers.  MLB.com reported that Dr. Kremcheck thinks that Wade Miley has a few more years left in him and that the rest of his elbow looked pristine.

In Miley’s case, Kremchek said, the rest of the elbow was “pristine,” but the ligament was definitely in need of repair, and probably explains why Miley had been dealing with shoulder issues and other injuries recently as he compensated for the compromised elbow.

Without him having to worry about where his elbow is and how it feels, I’m very optimistic that this guy has a few more years in him. And so does he.
