AS Roma Training SessionFull-back. The perpetual thorn in Roma’s side. While it’s not the most glamorous role in the game, it has puzzled the Giallorossi for years. Sure, they’ve had a few short-term successes over the years, but too often, those solutions were flashes in the pan, flaming out thanks to a lack of talent, focus, or fitness.

Leonardo Spinazzola has been an exception to that rule, racking up over 150 appearances during his five seasons with Roma, but he hasn’t been quite the same since tearing his Achilles tendon in the summer of 2022. And with his contract expiring at the end of this season, Roma wisely sought a little insurance at the position this winter, signing Spanish left-back Angeliño on loan from RB Leipzig.AS Roma Training Session

This may have been a shrewd move on paper, but with nine stops in his 10-year career, Angeliño wasn’t exactly the picture of stability. While his stints in New York, Eindhoven, and Manchester (to name a few) likely made him a more interesting and cultured person, nothing in his career suggested he’d be more than a passing fancy. This left us questioning whether he was a genuine solution at the position or just the latest in a long line of frustrating experiments.AS Roma Training Session

Rather than waiting for an answer, Daniele De Rossi threw Angeliño into the deep end, starting the 27-year-old Spaniard 11 times in 13 appearances since he arrived at the end of January. And while he hasn’t registered any goals or assists, Angeliño’s aggression and willingness to push the ball up the pitch and into the penalty area has been a boon for De Rossi’s side.
