The Arizona Diamondbacks and Detroit Tigers have only played each other twice this season but there is already some bad blood between the two teams. Led by an outstanding pitching performance from Jack Flaherty, the Tigers went on to win Saturday’s game 8-3 in Arizona. Flaherty’s strong outing wasn’t the only talking point he was involved in on Saturday.
The veteran righty found himself in a heated back and forth exchange with Diamondbacks’ dugout and manager Torey Lovullo. The quarrel escalated until the Arizona manager had enough and appeared to tell Flaherty to sit down and shut up.
The video can be seen here on a recent post on X.
According to Lovullo, the comments in the seventh inning was the culmination of several incidents from the Tigers dugout.
“What happened there…wasn’t the first thing that happened,” said Lovullo after the game. “We felt like there was more than just that situation that popped up.”
Flaherty had one of his best outings of the season and finally managed to secure his first win of the season after nine starts. This was a closely contested pitching duel for the first six innings but Flaherty’s teammates finally provided him with some run support with six runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth inning.
Flaherty had no problem working through a talented Diamondbacks lineup and finished the night with nine strikeouts over 98 pitches. He conceded just two runs and gave up five hits over 6 innings. The 28-year-old improves to 1-3 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.79 over nine games.
The Tigers return to Chase Field on Sunday and it will be interesting to see how the Diamondbacks respond after losing the first two games by a combined score of 21-3.
