Wrexham secured promotion to League One for the first time since 2005.
It was a joyous occasion for everyone involved with the club as the players wrote their names into folklore, achieving back-to-back promotions for the first time in their history.
Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo played a vital role in securing their status in the third tier for next season and is currently deciding his immediate future.
Okonkwo has just been released after spending 15 years at Arsenal. Most supporters are praying the 22-year-old decides to join Wrexham permanently having enjoyed a sensational campaign at the Racecourse Ground.
The Englishman ranked third for most clean sheets in League Two while earning a spot in the Team of the Season.
And although his latest comments don’t sound too promising, the towering goalkeeper did love his time in Wales and thanked Rob McElhenney for his support.
Wrexham’s owners are people who care immensely about everyone associated with the football club. Paul Mullin previously said that Ryan Reynolds is the first to text him after a match, even before his other hal
Youngster Okonkwo has shared a similar experience with the owners and when he was going through a rough patch, he said that McElhenney was the first to pick him up by calling him straight after the game.
Speaking to the Mirror, Okonkwo said: “When we had a third loss in a row, Rob McElhenney called me straight after the game and he just said to me, ‘Keep doing what you are doing, you’ve been excellent for us and I’ve no doubts that you’ll be back to full form.’
“It was so good to get that call, they are so supportive and I was really happy with the way they backed me and helped me. They are very involved, they want the team to win every single week and they let us know that.
“You get text messages, they come to as many games as possible and you don’t get that from all owners.”
Okonkwo claims this heartwarming behaviour from McElhenney is rare from football club owners, and it’s what sets them apart from the rest.
Phil Parkinson has already claimed Wrexham are working on a deal to sign Okonkwo permanently but accepts it could take a while to resolve his future.
This is undoubtedly a massive decision for the youngster to make as while he’s wanted by other Championship and European sides, the goalkeeper is guaranteed a starting spot at Wrexham.
A deciding factor in his final decision could be the relationship he’s built up with the owners in Wales, sharing special moments that will live with him forever.
It’s the sort of connection that money can’t buy, and although an opportunity to play in the second tier or abroad is tempting, Okonkwo’s patience can be rewarded by signing for Wrexham.
After all, McElhenney and Reynolds have ambitions of leading the Reds into the Championship, claiming they’ll do whatever it takes this summer.
That should fill Okonkwo with excitement that this project is only just getting started, and he would be a hero in the town of Wrexham if he signed a permanent contract.
