The former Toon boss endured a difficult time at St James’ Park, struggling to get a tune out of a squad that was massively being held back by Mike Ashley. While Steve Bruce was not popular amongst Newcastle United fans, he certainly managed the club during a very challenging period.

But he did have some talented players at his disposal. Joelinton was his most expensive signing ever, and he has gone on to become a real superstar in black and white. However, that was not the case when Joelinton played under Bruce, back when he was a failing striker.

Bruce also had Joe Willock, who was absolutely outstanding for him, while he brought Callum Wilson to the club too.

They were excellent under Bruce, but they are not considered one of the best players ever managed by the 63-year-old.

Bruce appeared on TalkSPORT on Tuesday, and was asked by a caller to name the three best players he has managed during his career. He went with Christophe Dugarry and Jermaine Pennant, whilst also paying tribute to ASM.

“Saint-Maximin at Newcastle,” he said.

“Wow. What a talent this kid had. All of a sudden I’m watching somebody and thinking there’s not many people can do what he can do.
