Sheffield Wednesday have kickstarted their transfer business with defensive additions in recent weeks.Charlie Cresswell of England in action during a training session at St George's Park on March 24, 2024 in Burton upon Trent, England.

The Owls have already snapped up Yan Valery and Max Lowe in a bid to bolster their backline this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday’s central defence remains untouched, with the future of Dominic Iorfa and Di’Shon Bernard yet to be decided.

The pair have both been offered new contracts but are yet to put pen to paper, with the latter still unsure whether to commit his future.

Bernard’s contract situation was put on hold as he jet off to Copa America this summer, however he now looks set to return home after Jamaica suffered successive defeats to Mexico and Ecuador.

Wednesday will be eager to wrap up his contract in the coming weeks, but if the 23-year-old decides to leave then they are going to have to act fast to secure his replacement.

Bernard arrived on a free transfer last summer but is certainly worth a lot more for them, making replacing him particularly difficult.

Charlie Cresswell could be available this summer

While Wednesday could look to the free agent market again, to bring in someone of such quality with plenty of potential is likely to cost them.Charlie Cresswell of England in action during a training session at St George's Park on March 24, 2024 in Burton upon Trent, England.

The Owls have to be prepared to open their wallet this summer, and splashing their cash on Leeds United’s Charlie Cresswell is definitely not the worst way to spend it.

The defender looks likely to leave Elland Road this summer, with the likes of Blackburn, Ipswich and Middlesbrough expressing interest in January.

Cresswell only managed five appearances in the Championship this term, but has already shown he is worth way more than a benchwarmer.

The Leeds United defender previously impressed at Millwall

The 21-year-old spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Millwall, bagging six goal contributions in 28 matches from the back.

He made 90 clearances, won 222 duels, made 37 interceptions and 23 blocks, helping the Lions to eight clean sheets and 12 wins.

Former Millwall boss Gary Rowett previously described him as ‘vocal’, ‘brilliant’ and ‘humble’, setting him up for a promising return to Leeds, which saw him linked with Stuttgart and Frankfurt.Charlie Cresswell of England in action during a training session at St George's Park on March 24, 2024 in Burton upon Trent, England.

He then fell down the pecking order under Daniel Farke and could now be available for around £4m this summer.

It’s a big chunk of cash for Wednesday to pay, but if they really want to strengthen their squad to play-off quality and also invest in youth, then Cresswell could be a good player to target.
