Newcastle United ended the month of June in frantic fashion as the club raced to meet the financial demands of Profit and Sustainability Rules – finally raising much needed funds by selling Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.
On this week’s Monday Show via The Everything is Black and White Podcast, host Andrew Musgrove and Chronicle Live’s Aaron Stokes reflected back on the last 72 hours.
The pair discussed the exits of Minteh to Brighton and Anderson to Nottingham Forest, analysing just how big of a blow it is to lose two youngsters tipped for stardom. Also up for discussion was how United found themselves scrambling around with just hours to go until the deadline, and if now they can spend funds to strengthen the team this summer.
Newcastle United’s owners defended after questions over communication
With United left scrambling around to raise funds to reduce their deficit before the deadline, some fans have asked why United’s board have not spoken out and explained how the club found themselves in such a situation. Communication was one of the things the owners promised when they took the club over from Mike Ashley in October 2021 and they have followed through on that – but questions have been raised by some about why nothing was said leading up to or after the deadline.
But podcast host Andrew Musgrove believes that staying silent was the right move by United’s board – so to avoid tipping off rivals that there were potentially some bargains to be had.
