Trippier was then expected to drop out of the starting lineup for Saturday’s game against Switzerland as Gareth Southgate considered switching to a three-man defensive unit, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Bukayo Saka at one point tipped to be the wing-backs.
However, Southgate then spoke in glowing terms about Trippier on Friday before reports emerged suggesting the Newcastle star would start over Alexander-Arnold.
