The 27-year-old is a long-term target of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle, who will not play in European competition this season after Manchester United’s victory in the FA Cup final ended their hopes of playing in the Conference League.
The Magpies have one of the Premier League’s leading marksman on their books in the form of Alexander Isak, but are in the market for a new centre-forward amid uncertainty over the future of Callum Wilson.
Sources have told 90min that Newcastle initially tried to sign Calvert-Lewin before the PSR deadline on 30 June, in a deal that would have seen Yankuba Minteh go the other way. He ended up joining Brighton & Hove Albion instead and with the PSR deadline now passed, and Everton hopeful of finalising a club takeover soon, there is less of a financial need to sell Calvert-Lewin.
That said, Calvert-Lewin has just a year remaining on his Everton contract and it remains to be seen whether or not he’d agree to a new deal. But he has been unable to agree terms with Newcastle, who are reluctant to break their existing wage structure, and a move to St James’ Park is unlikely to happen unless the club are prepared to change their stance.
Newcastle have already concluded deals for Odysseas Vlachodimos, Lloyd Kelly, Lewis Hall and John Ruddy this summer, raising additional funds before the PSR deadline with the £35m sale of Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest.
Everton have also been active in the transfer market, bringing in Tim Iroegbunam and Iliman Ndiaye from Aston Villa and Marseille respectively, while sanctioning exits for Lewis Dobbin and Ben Godfrey – the latter joining last season’s Europa League winners Atalanta for £11m.
