The Dodgers on Monday made their second trade in four days, so who says this trade deadline season hasn’t been busy. This move, like Friday’s deal with Boston, involved trading a pitcher they designated for assignment days earlier. On Monday, the Dodgers sent Ricky Vanasco to the Tigers for cash considerations.
Vanasco was designated for assignment last Wednesday, which made room on the 40-man roster for the signing of fill-in shortstop Nick Ahmed.
Last Friday, the Dodgers traded James Paxton to the Red Sox for minor league infielder Moises Bolivar.
Vanasco’s time with the Dodgers was about 14 months, acquired by trade from the Rangers last June, eventually sent outright off the 40-man roster, then re-signed to a major league contract in November, paying Vanasco at a rate of $900,000 over the season while in the majors and $250,000 while in the minors.
The Dodgers called up Vanasco three different times this season for a total of seven games. He made his major league debut on April 15, retiring all six batters he faced in two scoreless innings against the Nationals.
“I’ve been consistent in my work, and confident going out there every day knowing my stuff’s going to play no matter what, and just attacking the zone and attacking hitters,” Vanasco said when he was first called up. “I just go out there and try to get the next one, and do the same thing over and over again.”
Vanasco pitched twice in the seven games for which he was active. His second game was the antithesis of his debut, allowing hits to all three Tigers batters he faced in the ninth inning on July 13 at Comerica Park. The Dodgers blew a five-run lead to lose that game, but it’s understandable if you confused that with the other five-run lead they blew this month.
Vanasco, the 25-year-old right-hander, had a 3.47 ERA with five saves in 24 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, with 27 strikeouts and 21 walks in 23⅓ innings. The Tigers optioned him to Triple-A Toledo.
