Former Leeds United defender Leif Davis now has the most assists in the Championship with his lethal left boot setting up another goal during Ipswich Town’s weekend win over Preston North End.
As Conor Chaplin snuck around the back of the Preston defence and awaited Leif Davis’ corner, there was no doubt in his mind that the ball would arrive at his feet with almost laser-guided precision.
Chaplin converted in style too, former Leeds United youngster Davis adding another assist to his growing collection as Ipswich executed a set-piece routine to perfection to kick-start a 4-2 win over fellow high-flyers Preston North End.
“It was one straight off the training ground, I’m not going to lie!” Chaplin beams, speaking on ITV Sport’s EFL Highlights Show. “I’ve got so much trust in Leif Davis’ left foot.
“He’s so, so good.”

No player in the Championship has more than Davis’ six assists so far. Four of those have come in his last two games, the 23-year-old tearing Hull City apart a few days earlier.
Sold by Leeds for around £1 million back in the summer of 2022, the irony will not be lost on anyone at Elland Road that Davis could have come in very handy in West Yorkshire these days, injuries to Junior Firpo and Stuart Dallas doing little to dispel the feeling that the left-back spot is something of a poisoned chalice.
“We’ve done really well,” Davis tells the East Anglian Daily Times. “We’ve done what we had to do, but we’ve got to keep it doing. It’s all early doors really and there’s still plenty of games left.” 
With just 11 games played, Ipswich are already nine points ahead of Leeds. Successive promotions – Kieran McKenna guided the club to second in League Two last term – no longer seem like such a fanciful prospect.
The Premier League beckons
“It just shows that we’re working really hard with the manager,” Davis adds. “He’s obviously worked at the top level as well (with Manchester United). He knows what to expect from players.
“It’s one of the hardest leagues that I’ve played in, the Championship. It’s a very difficult league because you’ve got very good teams, especially this year. Every team is very good this year.”
‘Difficult’ it may be, but Leif Davis is making life look easy at Ipswich.
