Coventry City manager Mark Robins flanked by senior coaches Mark Delaney and John Dempster at RytonMark Robins has appointed two senior coaches to his backroom staff rather than seeking a replacement for former assistant manager Adi Viveash, who left the club suddenly last month.

The Sky Blues boss advertised for a head of first team coaching last month following the shock departure of Viveash, who had been an integral part of the club’s success over the last seven years.

However, Robins has instead opted to promote two existing staff members, under-21s coach John Dempster and under-18s coach Mark Delaney after the pair stepped up over the summer to take a more prominent role with the senior squad.

Delaney and Dempster will work alongside fellow first-team coaches George Boateng and Rhys Carr, who joined in the summer, and goalkeeping coach Aled Williams, who joined the Sky Blues in 2019.

“I am very pleased to welcome Mark and John as first-team coaches,” said Robins.

“Both have impressed me, other staff and the players when we have worked with them, and will bring much knowledge, insight and experience to their new roles.

“Increasing the coaching resource at first-team level will allow for us to continue to grow and develop players collectively and as individuals, allowing greater focus to our coaching provision.

“It is testament also to the Academy that both Mark and John have impressed in that environment and are now being brought into the first-team set up, and emphasises the pathway that exists on and off the field for people to progress.”Coventry City manager Mark Robins flanked by senior coaches Mark Delaney and John Dempster at Ryton

A club statement said: “The Sky Blues have restructured its first-team coaching provision, electing to further increase the high-level coaching resource with the appointment of two new first-team coaches of great pedigree.

“Delaney and Dempster have worked with the Sky Blues first-team during pre-season, impressing with their knowledge, experience and the relationships already built with City’s players and staff and their appointments will help the Club prepare the team in the best possible way to achieve its aims in the 2024/25 season.

“Both Mark and John have worked successfully in the Sky Blues Academy in recent years, emphasising the pathway that exists for staff, as well as players, in the Club’s successful youth set-up.
