Four people were arrested following violent scenes at Elland Road as a fight erupted between two sets of supporters. The Super League Magic Weekend took place at Leeds United’s stadium this weekend, with over 50,000 people attending over the course of the weekend.
However, Sunday evening saw some unsavoury scenes in the Don Revie Stand as supporters of Castleford Tigers and Hull KR clashed in the closing stages of Rovers’ victory over Catalans Dragons. Police and stewards were in attendance as supporters were escorted from the stadium.
West Yorkshire Police have now confirmed that four men were arrested on suspicion of affray, with three people still in custody.
In a statement issued to Leeds Live, West Yorkshire Police said: “At about 5.45pm yesterday, officers involved in the policing operation for the rugby league Magic Weekend at Elland Road stadium responded to a fight in the North Stand involving a handful of supporters of Castleford Tigers and Hull KR.
“Officers supported stewards to separate those involved and brought the incident to a swift conclusion. There were no reports of any serious injuries.
“Four men were arrested on suspicion of affray in relation to the incident. One was later released without charge and three remain in custody.”
It was the first time Elland Road has ever hosted the Super League event, which sees all twelve teams play each other over the course of the weekend. However, the event was the second-lowest attendance in the concept’s 17-year history.
