Haji Wright starred in Coventry's win over OxfordHaji Wright believes Coventry City’s summer recruits are fitting in well as Mark Robins builds a squad capable of challenging for promotion out of the Championship.

The USA international was the star of the Sky Blue’s opening win of the new season, grabbing a 96th-minute winner against promoted Oxford United on Friday to send a bumper CBS Arena crowd into raptures.

The 26-year-old also scored in the first half before Milan van Ewijk made it two. Oxford fought back with two goals of their own before Wright seized on an Oxford mistake to doubled his tally.

Despite his starring role in the win, Wright was quick to praise his team-mates for their efforts on Friday. He told the club website: “All the players that have come in have done really well – we’re building that connection again that we had last season. Once everyone is at 100% and gels together, we will be a team to be reckoned with.”

The Sky Blues opened their campaign with a 1-0 defeat at Stoke City, but Wright insisted self-belief had never been an issue, even after throwing away an early lead against Oxford.Haji Wright starred in Coventry's win over Oxford

He explained: “We believe until the very last minute and we get a lot of late goals from that belief, and that’s something the gaffer tries to instil in us, to believe in our ability and try and play until the last minute.”

Coventryfinished ninth last season but will be hoping to at least reach the play-offs this term after a sizeable investment in Robins’ squad over the summer.
