Newcastle United will be without Fabian Schar for their first Premier League trip of the season after a red card appeal was rejected by the FA.Howe heads to former club AFC Bournemouth on Sunday (kick-off 2pm) in hope of securing back-to-back wins following the 1-0 victory Southampton last weekend. The Magpies won despite playing over an hour with 10 men after Schar was shown a red card for clashing with Ben Brereton Diaz.
Brereton Diaz barged into Schar, despite referee Craig Pawson stopping play for a free-kick. and the Switzerland international reacted by squaring up to the Saints man. When the pair touched foreheads, Brereton Diaz flung himself to the floor and Pawson reached for his back pocket.
The incident was reviewed VAR by Pawson’s on-field decision. Howe said after the game he thought the sending off was “harsh”, prompting the club to lodge an appeal.
United are awaiting the reasons as to why the decision wasn’t overturned.
Emil Krafth is set to partner Dan Burn in central defence while United look to close out a club-record transfer for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The summer window shuts on Friday at 11pm.
