Collins arrived from Bristol Rovers in January and took a bit of time to adjust to the Whites’ style of play.

The Welshman went on to have a big impact at the back end of last season, scoring a number of important goals.

McAtee didn’t get a pre-season with his Bolton team-mates after joining from Luton later in the window, but he got some valuable time on the training pitch during the international break.

The 25-year-old attacker got off the mark in the win at Barrow last time out and Evatt is confident he can kick on.

“We brought him in for the long term, not just the immediate,” he told The Bolton News.

“We know he can help us immediately but we think we can make John better as well, he has a lot of talent.

“We are going into almost a new level of detail with him now and the way we play is different to what he has been used to.

“A bit like Aaron Collins, the first couple of months he took some time to adapt and then the last couple of months of the season, he took off. I think the same is going to happen with John.”

Kyle Dempsey also got on the scoresheet at Holker Street. The midfielder also started against Shrewsbury and Exeter after missing part of pre-season through injury.

Dempsey has been used in a more advanced role behind the striker at times, and Evatt believes his versatility is a good fit for Wanderers’ new system.

“We just need to keep Kyle in one piece,” he added. “Every time Kyle has been in red hot form, we seem to have lost him.

“He was absolutely flying in pre-season and then he picks up a little injury that set him back. Now, we are just getting him back again.

“A fit Kyle Dempsey is a top player at this level. We have to keep him fit and in one piece, and I think the variance of this system suits him.”

Victor Adeboyejo was absent from the squad against Barrow but is back in contention for the visit of Huddersfield.

The 26-year-old striker came off the bench to score the winner at Leyton Orient on the opening day.

“Vic is fit, he is fine,” Evatt confirmed. “I was disappointed with his treatment – it wasn’t everybody but some of the messages he received on social media and some of the jokes were really poor.

“It was, I felt, disrespectful and to question his professionalism is just obscene because he is one of the most professional guys I have ever met in football.

“But that is the industry we are in and it is my job to come out here, say that and protect him because he deserves better.

“He will be fit and available. Randell Williams) trained really well, Toaly (Eoin Toal) is back and there are no real issues with the international lads, so the squad is looking a lot stronger.”
