Newcastle United maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign as they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 on Sunday.
The Magpies fell behind in the 36th minute, with Mario Lemina firing the opener after a quick counter from the hosts.
However, the Tyneside club made a comeback in the second-half as Fabian Schar and Harvey Barnes scored to seal full points for the visitors.
Kieran Trippier started the game on the bench but came on for the final 26 minutes.
The 33-year-old helped shore things up defensively and also made several effective breaks down the right flank.
His performance may not be enough to secure him a starting spot against Fulham on Saturday, but manager Eddie Howe confirms he has an important part to play for the club this season.
The English boss praises Trippier’s role in Newcastle’s victory at Wolves and also says he looks fitter in training.
He said (per The Northern Echo): “You can’t underestimate what Kieran gives you. A lot has been said about the substitutes at half-time (against Wolves), and they all had a positive impact on the game, but when Kieran came on, you could just feel his quality, whether that was his quality on the ball or his set-play delivery.
“Whatever aspect of his game transfers to the team, it makes a positive difference. We felt stronger when he came onto the field, certainly when we had the ball.
“I’m delighted with him. He looks fitter, and mentally, I think he’s in a good place. He’s got such an important part to play for us this season.”
Trippier joined Newcastle in January 2022 from Atletico Madrid, and he has gone on to make over 90 appearances for the English club.
However, the 33-year-old has been struggling for game time this season, with Tino Livramento ahead of him in the pecking order.
His future at St James’ Park remained a source of speculation throughout the summer.
With a his contract expiring in 2026, the Magpies were open to offers for the player.
