West Brom fell short in the push for promotion last season, losing in the play-off semi-finals to Southampton, who went on to beat Leeds United at Wembley Stadium for a place in the Premier League.
The Baggies were understandably gutted after coming up short, but with the transfer window to focus on and new ownership at the helm, they moved on from the disappointment and made success this time around a priority. And, thus far, things have gone to plan.
Four wins and a draw from five games has Carlos Corberan’s side sat at the top of the Championship table. They’re one of three unbeaten sides left alongside Sheffield United and Blackburn Rovers.
The most recent triumph saw West Brom dispatch of Portsmouth, and it didn’t take long for them to get going. A second-half brace from midfielder Alex Mowatt wrapped things up, but a goal within the first minute really set the tone.
And, it was a familiar link-up that yielded the goal – one that could just fire the Baggies back to the promised land.
Fellows and Maja on fire
With not even a minute on the clock, Darnell Furlong caught out the Pompey defence with a perfect throw-in down the line for Fellows. The West Brom academy graduate got to the byline and pulled back for Maja to slam beyond the helpless Will Norris in front of the travelling faithful.
It marked a fantastic start to a great day at the office for Corberan’s side, and it came courtesy of a partnership that is proving to be a real handful for Championship backlines.
