West Bromwich Albion midfielder John Swift has revealed that he had no intentions of leaving the Championship side, despite late interest from Coventry City according to Birmingham Live.

The 28-year-old has been a vital part of Carlos Coberan’s side so far this season, but things could have been very different for the midfielder had he opted to move to the Sky Blues during the summer transfer window.

Swift joined West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer last summer, following his six-year stint with Reading and played an important part in what was a frustrating end to the campaign for the Baggies.

This season, Swift has made 12 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring six goals and assisting another. His six goals make him one of the division’s top goalscorers so far this season.

However, during a recent Championship clash with Birmingham City, Swift suffered a calf injury and is expected to miss the next six weeks of the season, which includes the trip to Coventry City with the fixture live on Sky Sports.

Despite a failed promotion last season, Swift opted to remain at the Hawthorns to try and take the club back into playoff contention, with the side currently sitting in 11th place, one point ahead of the Sky Blues.

To be honest it was so late in the window, I had no idea of it and when it did come about I knew it was two days left and nothing was going to get done – and even if it did I didn’t really want to leave,

As soon as I found out I rung my agent and told him I didn’t really want to go, I wasn’t interested in leaving.

wanted to stay and had my head on staying whenever we finished the game against Swansea last season. That’s how it is in football, some things come right at the end [of the window], but for me it was a no-brainer to stay.”

Swift has been a consistent Championship player over the last six/seven years and if he had opted to leave the club, it would have come as a major blow for the football club.John Swift Is Your December Player Of The Month - The Tilehurst End

Although the player is on a high wage, he falls into the ‘must not lose’ category at the Hawthorns and if they are going to push for the top six, they will have to fend off interest during the January window.
