According to GiveMeSport, Tottenham Hotspur are now ready to make Cristian Romero their highest earner in an effort to keep the centre-back away from Real Madrid.
Tottenham want Romero to sign a new deal
The report says that Spurs are ‘desperate’ to tie Romero down to a new contract quickly as Madrid are potentially looking to ‘up the ante’ in their pursuit of the Argentine.
Tottenham are now expected to open discussions with their vice-captain over a new contract and are ready to offer him a bumper pay rise.
The outlet says that the Lilywhites are prepared to hand Romero a deal worth £200,000 per week if he is willing to commit to his long-term future at the club.
Such a deal would see the 27-year-old become the highest earner at the club, overtaking Son Heung-min who is currently on a deal worth around £190,000 per week.
Real Madrid are thinking about a Romero bid
GiveMeSport allege that Los Blancos are ‘seriously considering’ a fresh attempt to land Romero and Tottenham fear being dragged into a battle to persuade the defender to stay.
As a result, they are now putting plans in place to open talks with the former Juventus man and his representatives soon.
The publication adds that Spurs will hold out for around £100m if Madrid do make advances for Romero in the near future.
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham will be keen to tie down both Son and Romero soon as not only are they two of our most important players but they are also the leaders of the side. Losing either player would severely set back Postecoglou’s project.
