Leeds United supporters are among the “most dedicated in the EFL”, according to a new study. Bristol Street Motors have crunched the data for the number of fans who travelled on the road during the 2023/24 season and how many miles they racked up along the way.
The Whites, who missed out on an instant Premier League return after losing to Southampton in the play-off final at Wembley, finished third in the research, which includes clubs from the Championship, League One and League Two. United are estimated to have sold around 63,000 away tickets last term, with the average fan travelling around 3,200 miles.
Sunderland topped the list, with an estimated 60,000 supporters clocking up nearly 5,000 miles on average, with Plymouth Argyle finishing second in the table. The Pilgrims, who avoided relegation on the final day following a hard-fought win over Hull City, racked up 258 million miles on the road across the season.
Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth, Norwich City, Coventry City, Bolton Wanderers and Birmingham City made up the rest of the top 10. A spokesperson for Bristol Street Motors said: “It’s great to see clubs in the EFL so well-supported and fans willing to cover so much distance to get behind their teams.
“Some of these fans have to travel hundreds of miles just to get to a game and, when they do so in such great numbers, it really shows the value of the 72.”
Daniel Farke’s United outfit are back in action today. They take on struggling Cardiff City at the Cardiff City Stadium this afternoon.
