Diego Carlos was forced out of the matchday squad to face Wycombe Wanderers at the last moment as the Brazilian suffered an injury in the warm-up at Adams Park.
Originally named as a substitute as one of only two regular first-team players on the bench, Carlos was removed and replaced by young defender Thierry Katsukunya.
Unai Emery didn’t offer any update in the post-match press conference, leaving the Carlos situation up in the air. His late omission on Tuesday does make him a definite doubt for the weekend, though, where Villa might have to make a defensive change.
Carlos started the 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend and Ezri Konsa shifted to right-back, while other right-sided defenders Lamare Bogarde and Kosta Nedeljkovic were on the bench. One of those two youngsters, who both played the full 90 minutes at Wycombe, are likely to be called into action at Ipswich.
Villa’s failure to sign a new versatile right-back in the summer raised a few eyebrows at the time and the vulnerability in that position is now being emphasised even further. The good news, at least, is that Matty Cash is set for a return in the next couple of weeks.
