It was an open secret that Liverpool held talks with Newcastle United over the potential signing of Anthony Gordon.
Newcastle United were forced to wrestle with the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules over the summer and ended up selling exciting young duo Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to avoid any punishment.
During the PSR struggles, Newcastle offered Liverpool the chance to sign Anthony Gordon with the Merseyside club showing an interest in the 23-year-old winger.
Newcastle set a price tag of £80m for Gordon and it turned out to be a figure that Liverpool thankfully deemed too expensive.
However, Liverpool have continued to be linked with a move beyond the summer and Newcastle’s priority is to give Gordon a new contract to fend off interest.
Liverpool turn attention to Nico Williams
The biggest problem facing Arne Slot at Liverpool is that they look set to lose Mohamed Salah when his contract expires at the end of the season.
It’s therefore no surprise that they are trying to land a marquee winger and set their sights on Anthony Gordon.
However, CaughtOffside now report that Liverpool are assessing alternative options after Gordon was too expensive in the summer.
They claim Liverpool are looking at Athletic Bilbao and Spain star Nico Williams as a potential alternative.
Williams starred for Spain at Euro 2024 and was linked to the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona over the summer before staying put at Bilbao.
According to Forbes, Williams is expected to cost around €60million (£50m).
Great news for Newcastle United and Anthony Gordon
Gordon has been training well for Newcastle despite the huge speculation over his future, but it does appear that it is having an impact on his performances.
