Eddie Howe is hoping for a huge double Newcastle United injury boost when Premier League action returns after the international break. After the frustrations of the goalless draw at Everton, which saw the Magpies dominate but fail to find the killer touch, United could welcome back two key men when Brighton head to St James’ Park.

Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson are both close to a return from toe and back injuries respectively, with Newcastle desperate for some extra firepower. Anthony Gordon has performed well as a makeshift striker, but the England star is at his best when in his natural wide role.

Howe remains cautious over the return of his two strikers, but confidence is high that both will be fit to take their place in the squad after the international matches. United also saw Kieran Trippier limp off at Everton, while they have longer-term absentees in Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles. Here’s the latest Newcastle United injury news and potential return dates.

United have missed their Swedish striker after he picked up a broken toe in the win over Wolves. He managed to play against Fulham but sat out the game with Manchester City and Everton and won’t join up with Sweden this week. While nothing is certain, he is expected to have recovered when the action resumes in a fortnight.

What Howe has said: “We’re still missing some top players that can make a difference, especially at the top end of the pitch, without our two recognised number nines at the moment. Isak won’t make the game at Everton, but we hope he’ll be back after the international break”
