Harlem Berry Signs with LSU: Loyalty and Maturity Define His Journey
Harlem Berry, Louisiana’s top-ranked 2025 recruit and a five-star running back according to 247Sports Composite, made his highly anticipated college decision on Wednesday. Entering the St. Martin’s Episcopal School gym in a casual sweatshirt and black pants, Berry exuded a calm confidence. There was no suspense or spectacle—he already knew where he was going.
The early signing period marked a pivotal moment for Berry as he officially committed to LSU. Reflecting on his decision, Berry said, “Before I even made the decision, I knew where I wanted to go. Once I made it, I was locked in. Nothing was going to change my mind.”
Loyalty Over Offers
Berry emphasized that his choice was rooted in loyalty and personal connection, particularly with LSU running backs coach Frank Wilson. “I built a great relationship with Coach Wilson,” Berry explained. “It was more than just football.” While other universities offered paths to success, the bond he shared with Wilson set LSU apart.
Berry’s loyalty stood out amidst the volatile world of recruiting, where NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deals often sway decisions. Despite tempting offers, including high-profile flips by other LSU targets like Bryce Underwood, Dakorien Moore, and Kade Phillips, Berry remained steadfast. “NIL has played a big part in changing minds lately,” Berry acknowledged. “But that’s their career. I wish them the best. I’m here in Baton Rouge.”
A Record-Breaking Career
During his four years at St. Martin’s, Berry amassed staggering statistics: 8,571 rushing yards, 154 touchdowns, and 52 receptions for 888 yards. He also excelled on special teams, scoring three return touchdowns. LSU head coach Brian Kelly expressed excitement about Berry’s potential, calling him an “elite player who can impact our roster right away.”
Berry, along with Alexandria High’s four-star running back JT Lindsey, fills a crucial role for LSU as the team prepares for the departures of veteran players Josh Williams and John Emery.
Family Bonds and Southern Hospitality
Berry’s parents, Harry and Tonika, played a key role in his journey. Tonika described the welcoming environment at LSU: “Being from the South, the hospitality was overwhelming. We’re big on family, and LSU felt like home.”
Harry, who shares a history with Coach Wilson from their days at St. Augustine, noted that while their connection was meaningful, the decision ultimately belonged to Harlem. “Frank was phenomenal with his recruiting, but I allowed Harlem to make the decision,” he said.
Navigating the NIL Era
The Berry family also learned valuable lessons about the evolving landscape of college football. NIL contracts, while not a determining factor for Harlem, provided insights into the financial side of the sport. “Parents or family members are crucial in helping these young recruits navigate such decisions,” Harry said, acknowledging the complexities young athletes face.
Former St. Martin’s coach and current athletic director Frank Gendusa praised Berry’s maturity throughout the recruiting process. “Despite the attention, he’s remained humble and grounded,” Gendusa said.
Looking Ahead
Berry’s commitment to LSU was solidified early in the recruiting process. After witnessing LSU’s thrilling overtime victory against Alabama in 2022, he felt no need to explore other options. As LSU’s 2025 class continues to take shape, Berry stands out not only for his talent but also for his loyalty and maturity.
The Tigers are gaining more than a game-changing athlete—they’re welcoming a young man whose character sets him apart.
