JUST IN WESTBROM SENSATIONAL ACE JOIN SWIFT IN INJURY LIST
West Brom may face a transfer “scramble” for John Swift if he can continue his fine form for the Baggies when he returns to fitness, says Express & Star journalist Lewis Cox.
“Certain Albion players hitting form during a time when the financial situation is uncertain and the January transfer window is two and a half months away, is somewhat of a double edged sword,” Cox wrote.
“That is very much the case with someone like John Swift, who although injured for a few weeks, has been one of the best players in the division of late.
“You want your players to be hitting form and playing well to move you towards the right end of the table, but at the same that advertises the talent Albion have.”
He added: “He will be in the bracket of players Corberan will not want to lose, but given the off field situation offers will need to be considered seriously.
“However, they have to be at the right price, and what that price is remains to be seen.
“He doesn’t return now until the end of November, but if he does return and in that month before the window takes his tally from six goals to say ten, then there could be a scramble for him.”
The way the cookie crumbles
It is a very fair assessment from Cox.
There is no doubting how brilliant Swift has been for West Brom so far this season, and obviously the kind of form he is showing brings attention – possibly even from Premier League sides.
And there is no escaping the fact that unless things change drastically, i.e. a change of ownership, then any realistic offers for players are likely to be considered by the Baggies in January.
Hopefully they can reject any overtures for Swift because when he comes back to fitness next month he will be a vital cog in the West Brom machine under Carlos Corberan as the Spaniard tries to produce a promotion tilt this term.
It would be a blow for Corberan to lose anyone else from an already small squad, but one thing he has proven time and again is that he is adept at finding solutions. Let’s just hope he doesn’t need to find one to replace Swift anytime soon.
