Oklahoma State football adds former OU RB Kalib Hicks via transfer portal.
Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 209 pounds, Hicks arrived at Oklahoma as a highly-touted recruit from Ryan High School in Denton, Texas. During his time at Ryan, Hicks delivered an impressive performance under head coach Dave Henigan, who also mentored former Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders. Hicks tallied over 3,000 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns throughout his high school career, showcasing the talent and versatility that initially earned him a spot with the Sooners.
Now entering his redshirt sophomore year, Hicks will bring his skills to a developing Oklahoma State running back unit. In his two seasons with Oklahoma, Hicks appeared in seven games, managing five carries for 25 yards. While his opportunities at OU were limited, his potential to make an impact at OSU is significant.
The Cowboys’ running back room is currently undergoing a major transition. They have lost key players, including Ollie Gordon II, who declared for the NFL Draft, and A.J. Green, who entered the transfer portal. This departure of seasoned veterans has left the team leaning on a younger group of players. Returning to the mix are redshirt senior Trent Howland, redshirt sophomore Sesi Vailahi, and redshirt freshmen Rodney Fields Jr. and Jaden Allen-Hendrix. Additionally, OSU recently signed freshman D.J. Dugar, adding further depth to the position.
Hicks’ arrival not only bolsters the team’s roster but also adds to the growing list of former Sooners who have transitioned to Oklahoma State in the transfer portal era. Hicks is now the third player to make this move, following wide receiver Gavin Freeman and walk-on safety Reed DeQuisie, who both joined OSU last year. This trend illustrates the changing dynamics of player movement in college football, particularly within rival programs like Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
With Hicks now part of the Cowboys’ lineup, the team hopes his talent and fresh perspective will contribute to their ongoing efforts to remain competitive. His transfer is yet another example of how the portal continues to reshape traditional rivalries and player trajectories, creating new storylines for the Bedlam series and beyond.
