Former Alabama football defensive back DeVonta Smith has reportedly found his new college destination. According to multiple sources, Smith is set to transfer to Notre Dame, a move first reported by Pete Nakos of On3.

Smith, who was a starting safety for Alabama this season, entered the transfer portal when the current entry window opened, following the conclusion of the 2024 regular season. Over the course of his four-year career in Tuscaloosa, Smith faced several injury setbacks in 2023 but remained committed to the program during its coaching transition. Eventually, he earned a starting role this season, playing as a key member of the Crimson Tide’s defense. Smith was primarily deployed at the “husky” safety position, a role emphasized by Alabama’s defensive coordinator, Kane Wommack. In 2024, Smith contributed 30 tackles, forced one fumble, and broke up five passes.

Smith’s decision to transfer marks a new chapter in his college football journey, as he will now join a Notre Dame squad that is coming off a strong season, including an appearance in the College Football Playoff (CFP). The Fighting Irish, who earned a No. 5 seed in the CFP, are set to open their postseason run with a home first-round game against Indiana.

Meanwhile, Alabama’s season is far from over, as the Crimson Tide prepares for the ReliaQuest Bowl against Michigan. Alabama’s CFP hopes were dashed after a series of losses to Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Oklahoma, which ultimately left the team just outside of the playoff field. The ReliaQuest Bowl, which will mark the final game of Alabama’s 2024 season, is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on December 31, in Tampa. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.

As of now, the transfer portal remains open for undergraduate players until December 29, allowing athletes to make decisions about their future programs before the deadline.
