Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard was frustrated with his side’s 1-0 defeat away to Sutton United in the EFL Youth Alliance South East on Saturday.

“We had lots of the ball but didn’t utilise it well enough in terms of chance creation, and we were naïve discipline-wise,” Goddard said.

“We’re conceding lots of goals where we get the last touch on the ball and it drops to an opponent, which shows a lack of clarity in decision-making and execution of technique.

“Our technique in key moments wasn’t good enough and let us down today.

“We always talk about being brilliant at the basics, and the boys have to show effort and application consistently throughout the week as well as at the weekend.

“It was a really frustrating way to lose the game, and it’s the first time we’ve lost back-to-back in a long time.

“I’m keen to see how we respond in two weeks, and we have an opportunity for reflection and to put things right in the meantime.

“We have a busy period coming up, and it’s important that we show the right character moving forwards.”
